Healthy Teeth – Healthy Body

We all know that regular dental visits helps keep your teeth and gums healthy. Now research shows there are many other benefits to having a healthy mouth, including a direct link between gum disease and heart disease.

The bacteria found in the mouths of people with gum disease are from the same strain of bacteria that can cause atherosclerosis, or narrowing of the blood vessels. It is believed that the when the bacteria from the gums are swallowed they can enter the bloodstream and organs causing thickening of the blood vessels.

Gum disease is also believed to have links to premature births. Researchers believe it could be responsible for up to 10% of premature births. A new $1 million study at King Edward Memorial Hospital was started in February 2005 to study this theory.

Gum disease is preventable for most people by careful home care and regular visits to the dentist. Here at YDC, for most people, we recommend 2 visits with our fantastic hygienists/therapists and home care including brushing twice a day and flossing at lease once each day. For some people we will recommend more regular visits or different home care. We would be happy to discuss your needs at your next visit, or you can drop in or phone to talk us.
