Dentistry is not expensive, neglect is.
It’s the dental procedure with perhaps one of the more negative reputations – root canals.
At Yokine Dental we want to throw light on that myth!
That’s right, we’re here to tell you that this most ‘frightening’ of treatments is actually not that bad. Stay with us here…
A root canal is a treatment used to repair and save a tooth that is badly decayed or becomes infected; the biggest misconception around root canal treatments is that the actual operation is the painful part. Here’s the good news, this is actually not the case. The intense pain of a root canal comes from NOT getting it treated. Why? Without treatment the tissue surrounding the tooth becomes infected and abscesses may form. The best thing you can do is stay on top of your oral health, recognise any signs of tooth decay and most importantly avoid procrastination!
Still not convinced?
The first step in any root canal procedure is to take an X-Ray to see the shape of the root canals and determine if there are any signs of infection. Most dentists will anaesthetise the area to help you feel relaxed and at ease. An access hole is then drilled into the tooth where the pulp along with bacteria, decayed nerve tissue and related debris is removed; remember, this is pain free dentistry when treated early! In fact, many have reported the procedure itself is no more painful than having a filling placed.
Once the tooth is thoroughly cleaned, it is sealed, and the interior and exteriors are filled with a sealer paste and filling. The final step may involve further restoration with a crown to protect the tooth, prevent it from breaking and restore it to full function. This may all occur throughout a few visits, but at Yokine Dental you are always fully informed about what treatment will be done, the steps involved and why.
Fortunately root canal treatment is highly successful; the procedure has more than a 95% success rate, and many teeth fixed with a root canal can last a lifetime. Also, because the final step is the application of a crown or filling, it won’t be obvious to onlookers a root canal was performed.
